Sulfa-Terra Oral Solution
Download leafletPharmacological Properties
SULFA-TERRA Oral Solution is a potentiated sulfonamide combination based on a balanced mixture of Sulfadimethoxine Sodium and Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride. The sulfadimethoxine sodium in the combination prevents the biosynthesis of folic acid, which is present in the bacterial cell and necessary for nucleic acid synthesis and cell multiplication, by taking the place of the para-aminobenzoic acid molecule found in the dihydrofolic acid structure, and the oxytetracycline hydrochloride prevents protein synthesis by binding to the 30 S ribosomal subunit located in the bacterial cell, thereby preventing the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the mRNA-ribosomal complex and consequently the addition of new amino acid molecules to the peptide chain. Thus, a synergistic-type bacteriostatic and in some cases bactericidal effect is formed in susceptible pathogenic bacteria, and a broad antibacterial spectrum covering most gram positive and gram negative bacteria is provided.
The main bacteria susceptible to sulfonamide +oxytetracycline combinations are as follows:
-Gram positive aerobes: Bacillus spp., Corynebacterium spp., Erysipelothrix rhusiopathia, Listeria monocytogenes, staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp., Actinomyces spp.
-Gram negative anaerobes: Actinobacillus spp., Bordetella spp., Francisella tularensis, haemophilus spp., Pasteurella multocida, P. Haemolytica, Campylobacter fetus, Bornelia spp., Leptospira spp., Moraxella bovis, E. coli. Salmonella spp, Klebsiella spp., Proteus sp., Yersinia spp.,
Rickettsia spp., Pseudomonas aeroginosa. Mycoplasma spp., Mycobacterium spp., serratia spp., are considered resistant.
Indications
Sulfa-Terra Oral Solution is used for the treatment of infections caused especially by the susceptible bacteria mentioned above in calves and lambs whose rumen activity has not yet started, and in chickens.
Within this scope;
In broiler chickens; CRD, salmonellosis, colisepticemia, salpingitis, cholera, coryza and staphylococcus infections and other infections caused by susceptible bacteria,
In calves and lambs; bacterial-origin diarrhea, gastro-enteritis, colisepticemia, bronchopneumonia and calf diphtheria.
Usage and Dosage
‘Unless otherwise recommended by the veterinarian’
In chickens; it is administered in drinking water at a rate of 1 gr Sulfa-Terra daily for each 5 kg body weight. The total amount of Sulfa-Terra calculated according to the number of poultry and the volume of the water tank is first added to 8-10 liters of water to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The concentrated mixture thus prepared is transferred to the water tank, mixed thoroughly and given to drink continuously throughout the day. The daily amount of drug to be given must be prepared fresh. Treatment is continued for 4-6 days.
In lambs and calves; the drug is used for a total of 5 days at a rate of 0.5 gram on the first day and a maintenance dose of 0.25 gram on subsequent days for 4 days, for each 10 kg body weight. The required drug is mixed with a little water and given to the animals to drink.
SPECIAL CLINICAL INFORMATION AND SPECIAL WARNINGS FOR TARGET SPECIES
Due to its adverse effects on the rumen flora, it should not be used in lambs and calves whose rumen activity has started.
