Salcogen Oral Soluble Powder
Download leafletSALCOGEN Oral Soluble Powder is a yellowish-white, fine-particulate powder and contains in each gram gentamicin sulfate equivalent to 500 mg gentamicin base.
PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside group antibiotic with a bactericidal effect against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Its bactericidal effect occurs by binding to the 30 S ribosomal subunit, preventing the binding of mRNA to these, and causing misreading of the codons in the RNA. The main bacteria susceptible to gentamicin are as follows; E.coli, Enterobacter sp., Campylobacter sp., Klebsiella sp., Yersinia sp., Serratia sp., Haemophilus sp., Pasteurella sp. Pseudomonas aeroginosa strains and Staph. aureus are mostly susceptible. However, other gram positive bacteria, among which are also Streptococcus sp.’, some Pseudomonas sp. and anaerobic bacteria are resistant to gentamicin. When gentamicin is administered orally, it is very poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Gentamicin is distributed in the body mainly in the extracellular fluid, accumulating mostly in the kidney, liver and muscular structures. It passes into the placenta from the pleural and peritoneal cavities. It passes into the central nervous system and the cerebrospinal fluid at very low concentrations. Gentamicin is excreted largely in the urine and, in very small amounts, also in the bile and milk.
